Sen. Bellino supports Capt. Liedel memorial highway bill

LANSING, Mich. — Sen. Joseph Bellino on Wednesday voted for legislation to honor Monroe Township firefighter Joseph Liedel, who died in the line of duty in 2020.

Liedel died in August 2020 from injuries suffered in the line of duty while responding to an emergency the month earlier. He was 48.

“This is about honoring the life and service of Capt. Liedel, who served and protected the people of Monroe Charter Township for nearly three decades,” said Bellino, R-Monroe. “After following his father in becoming a firefighter, he earned the rank of captain and the trust and respect of his fellow colleagues. His service to others even included joining his fellow Monroe Township firefighters to help at ground zero in New York City after the 9/11 attacks. He continues to be missed, but with this tribute, he will never be forgotten.”

House Bill 4845 would designate a portion of Highway M-125, also known as South Dixie Highway, in Monroe County from East Dunbar Road to East Albain Road as the “Captain Joseph M. Liedel Memorial Highway.”

If the bill is signed into law, it will have no fiscal impact on state or local government. State law requires sufficient private contributions to completely cover the cost of erecting and maintaining markers indicating the name of a memorial highway.
