LANSING, Mich. — Sen. Joseph Bellino, R-Monroe, issued the following statement Wednesday after the presentation of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s fiscal year 2025 state budget recommendation:
“The governor paints a rosy picture, but the reality is that her budget relies on stopping a $700 million income tax cut and redirecting $670 million from the state’s teacher retirement plan to pay for more government spending.
“While I support the increase for schools and local governments, the governor continues to focus more on growing the size and scope of government instead of making long-term infrastructure investments and allowing hardworking folks to keep more of their own money.
“Michigan students, workers, and small business owners need and deserve a state budget that puts them first and adopts pro-growth policies used effectively in other states to attract new jobs and talent. Unfortunately, the governor has offered an irresponsible and short-sighted budget that continues the liberal spending spree that exhausted a $9 billion surplus last year — while offering peanuts to families struggling to make ends meet. We can — and must — do better.”
