Bellino’s Animal Control Officer Young memorial highway bill approved by Senate committee

LANSING, Mich. — Sen. Joseph Bellino joined Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough on Wednesday to support his legislation to honor Monroe County Sheriff Deputy Darrian Young, who died in the line of duty in 2020 at age 24.

“Animal Control Officer Darrian Young was an enthusiastic public servant and animal lover who lost her life far too soon,” said Bellino, R-Monroe. “When someone so young and full of life dies so early and unexpectedly, it’s difficult to accept — and four years later, that remains true with the loss of Deputy Young. This legislation would help our community honor her service to the people of Monroe County and remember her sacrifice.”

Senate Bill 978 would designate a portion of Highway M-50 in Monroe County from South Raisinville Road to Herr Road as the “Animal Control Officer Darrian Young Memorial Highway.”

Young died June 6, 2020, from injuries sustained in the line of duty when her marked Animal Control Division vehicle was hit by a drunken driver.

After hearing from Bellino and Goodnough, the Senate Veterans and Emergency Services Committee reported SB 978 to the full Senate for consideration.

If the bill is signed into law, it will have no fiscal impact on state or local government. State law requires sufficient private contributions to completely cover the cost of erecting and maintaining markers indicating the name of a memorial highway.
