Bellino announces Monroe included in state of emergency declaration following severe Thursday storms

LANSING, Mich. — State Sen. Joseph Bellino on Friday announced that Monroe County was included in a state of emergency declaration following severe thunderstorms that produced at least five tornadoes as they swept across lower Michigan on Thursday evening.

“This storm system carved paths of death and devastation all the way across lower Michigan, including a possible tornado that destroyed homes in Monroe County,” said Bellino, R-Monroe. “I am grateful the people of Monroe County will have access to this important resource for the relief and recovery efforts that are now ahead of them. I must admit, I was concerned knowing the governor denied emergency disaster requests for Lenawee and Hillsdale counties after a major ice storm caused severe damage and widespread power outages earlier this year.”

Bellino said severe weather events should also serve as a reminder of the importance of prioritizing infrastructure and emergency funding within the state budget.
