Bellino says council’s ‘irresponsible ideas’ would make population problem worse

LANSING, Mich. — Sen. Joseph Bellino, R-Monroe, issued the following statement on Thursday after Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s Growing Michigan Together Council voted on its report suggesting how to address the state’s stagnant population:

“As expected, this one-sided report is a Christmas wish list of government spending without any real regard for what policies help attract people and business investment.

“The council’s proposed solutions to help increase our state population are focused on more government and more spending to be paid for by making Michigan residents pay more in taxes.

“Instead of fixing the problem, these irresponsible ideas would make it worse. People and businesses are largely moving away from states with high taxes and moving to states with low tax burdens. Raising taxes to pay for billions of dollars in new spending would hurt existing Michigan families and job providers while also scaring away new talent and investment.”
